2. Description / Pharmacology:
Levofloxacin is a synthetic, broad-spectrum, third-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It inhibits bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase, enzymes essential for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination.
Pharmacological actions:

Bactericidal against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms

Effective in treating infections of respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, soft tissues, and enteric infections
3. Indications:
Livofloxin 500 is indicated for treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria:

Acute maxillary sinusitis

Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis

Community-acquired pneumonia
-
Uncomplicated & complicated urinary tract infections

Acute pyelonephritis
-
Uncomplicated & complicated skin and soft tissue infections

Enteric infections (e.g., typhoid, cholera, shigellosis)

4. Dosage & Administration:
Oral administration:

Adults:

Acute sinusitis: 500 mg once daily for 10â14 days or 750 mg once daily for 5 days
-
Chronic bronchitis exacerbation: 500 mg once daily for 7 days or 750 mg once daily (3â5 days depending on severity)

Community-acquired pneumonia: 500 mg once daily for 7â14 days or 750 mg once daily for 5 days

Uncomplicated UTI: 250 mg once daily for 3 days
-
Complicated UTI & acute pyelonephritis: 250 mg once daily for 7â10 days
-
Skin/soft tissue infections: 500â750 mg once daily depending on severity

Enteric fever: 500 mg once daily for 7â14 days
-
Diarrhea, cholera, shigellosis: 500 mg once daily, mild-to-moderate; 500 mg daily for 3 days, moderate-to-severe

Children:

6 months to <5 years: 10 mg/kg every 12 hours

5 years: 10 mg/kg every 24 hours

IV administration (Infusion):

Administered slowly over 60â90 minutes depending on dose

Adults: 250â500 mg every 24 hours; 750 mg over 90 minutes every 24 hours if indicated

Sequential therapy (IV â Oral) may be instituted at physicianâs discretion

5. Drug Interactions:

Antacids, iron, or adsorbents: Reduce absorption

NSAIDs: May increase CNS stimulation risk

Warfarin: May increase bleeding risk

Multivalent cations (Mg, Ca, Al): Avoid co-administration through same IV line
6. Contraindications:

Hypersensitivity to levofloxacin, quinolones, or any component of the formulation

Children under 16 years

Prophylactic use before surgery
7. Side Effects:

Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, flatulence, mild phototoxicity (0.1%)

Rare: Tremors, depression, anxiety, confusion, retinal detachment
8. Pregnancy & Lactation:

Not recommended during pregnancy or lactation
